Ice on Whyte kicks-off!

The 11th annual Ice on Whyte festival kicks off January 24, and runs till February 2.

The Strathcona Centre Community League is pleased to partner with Ice on Whyte, allowing the festival to program and utilize most of our community hall during the festival. There will be a Cultural Market Place every day in the big hall upstairs.

Impacts to the community:

  • Reminder that on-going classes at the hall (such as Play Group, Yoga and Community Fitness) are cancelled during this time.
  • Festival use of the parks will create two detours:
  1. Tommy Banks Way will be closed to traffic in both directions between Gateway Boulevard and 87 Avenue. Westbound drivers on 87 Avenue will need to detour north to Saskatchewan Drive between 7am Monday, January 20 and 7am Wednesday, February 5.
  2. The walking path in End of Steel park will be closed at the north-end of the festival site beginning Friday, January 10, re-routing walkers and runners around the festival site until Thursday, February 6.
  • Parking for the festival is south of the main site, in the Strathcona Farmers’ Market lot, south of the Yardbird Suite (NOT in the Community League parking lot).
  • The skate change area on the main floor of the hall, and our hockey rink, remain open to community league members throughout the duration.

Ice on Whyte

The International Ice Carving Competition kicks off the festival from January 24 to 26, and all 10 festival days are filled with outdoor fun. Enjoy the ice and snow carving exhibits, interactive children’s play area, the famous giant ice slide, games, ice carving lessons, nightly entertainment, and much more. Every day new ice and snow carvings will be created by the Artists in Residence and special guest artists. Come outside to play and stay to enjoy the live music, fashion, food, hot beverages and culturally themed days.

Hot chocolate served by YESS also helps raise money for the important youth organization, a neighbour to the festival and community league with day programming at the Armoury.

If you’re out snapping photos of the ice sculptures and winter fun, please consider adding your great shots to the Strathcona Centre Flickr group.
