Prioritize Whyte Ave

Three groups, Paths for People, Edmonton Transit Riders, and the Strathcona Business Association, are working together to develop a coordinated approach to revitalizing Whyte Avenue, including roads, sidewalks, trees, benches, and related public realm elements. With the Old Strathcona Public Realm Strategy (OSPRS) currently on hold and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) discussions on the horizon, this collaboration has formed under the “Prioritize Whyte Ave” initiative.

The goal is to align efforts and reduce duplication, both in construction and engagement, by approaching improvements to Whyte Avenue as a single, integrated project rather than separate upgrades. This approach aims to minimize overall construction time, reduce costs, and streamline public input.

With City budget allocations set each December, the group has launched this initiative early to gather meaningful feedback that can be brought forward to Council in advance. A key objective is to ensure that BRT remains a priority and receives appropriate funding in the upcoming budget cycle.

You can support this effort by completing the survey and sharing it with others who live in, work in, or care about the Whyte Avenue area. To date, there have been approximately 200 responses, and increasing participation will help strengthen the case for investment. While many areas across the city have seen recent upgrades, Whyte Avenue has not received the same level of attention in some time. This is an opportunity to help change that.

Survey purpose:
We’re seeking input to better understand perceptions of current infrastructure conditions and to identify the types of investments needed for sidewalks, bus stops, patio spaces, trees, and more along 82 Avenue NW. The survey takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

Survey: Prioritize Whyte Ave

The Clarity Development Advisory team is asking for community input on a proposed rezoning of 8 properties along Scona Road and 93 avenue. This is a voluntary, pre-application engagement opportunity intended to share information early and better understand local perspectives. Feedback received will be summarized and shared with the City as part of the rezoning application materials. Where appropriate, elements of the application may be revised in response to input received.

Currently zoned for RS (Small Scale Residential – allowing a 3-storey building with maximum of 8 dwellings), the proposal is to rezone to RM h28 (Medium Scale Residential – allowing an 8-storey building with a minimum of 90 dwellings).

Pre-application consultation is currently underway. Feedback received by March 14, 2026 will be summarized as part of the pre-application consultation and used to help inform the rezoning application. Questions and comments are still welcome after this date.

At this stage, the application is for rezoning only. No Development Permit application has been prepared or submitted. High-level conceptual building massing is being explored to better understand potential considerations such as shadowing and fit within the surrounding context.

After three long years (it felt more like 10), Edmonton’s iconic Hawrelak Park will reopen on March 13 2026!

Since opening on Canada day in 1967, the 68-hectare “living room” of our River Valley has been home to playgrounds, promenades, skating ponds, annual festivals, and roughly 50 jillion picnics.

The Park closed to the public in 2023 for the first updates to its storm, sanitary, water and power systems since it first opened.

This spring, visitors will also see a number of upgrades throughout the park, like:

A new lakefront promenade,

A modernized pavilion,

Enhanced Accessibility to paths and trail, and

A new, nature-themed playground!

Picnic site bookings and major festivals/events will officially return to the park in May, and a grand Re-Opening celebration is scheduled for May 30.
