On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities across the globe. Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.

Created in 2007 in Toronto by friends of the urban thinker Jane Jacobs, the annual series of free, volunteer-led urban walks has grown from 27 to over 500 walks, from Calgary to Canberra and Sao Paulo to Saskatoon.

There are many walks across Edmonton. For more information and to register, visit https://janewalksyeg.wordpress.com/

Prioritize Whyte Ave

Three groups, Paths for People, Edmonton Transit Riders, and the Strathcona Business Association, are working together to develop a coordinated approach to revitalizing Whyte Avenue, including roads, sidewalks, trees, benches, and related public realm elements. With the Old Strathcona Public Realm Strategy (OSPRS) currently on hold and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) discussions on the horizon, this collaboration has formed under the “Prioritize Whyte Ave” initiative.

The goal is to align efforts and reduce duplication, both in construction and engagement, by approaching improvements to Whyte Avenue as a single, integrated project rather than separate upgrades. This approach aims to minimize overall construction time, reduce costs, and streamline public input.

With City budget allocations set each December, the group has launched this initiative early to gather meaningful feedback that can be brought forward to Council in advance. A key objective is to ensure that BRT remains a priority and receives appropriate funding in the upcoming budget cycle.

You can support this effort by completing the survey and sharing it with others who live in, work in, or care about the Whyte Avenue area. To date, there have been approximately 200 responses, and increasing participation will help strengthen the case for investment. While many areas across the city have seen recent upgrades, Whyte Avenue has not received the same level of attention in some time. This is an opportunity to help change that.

Survey purpose:
We’re seeking input to better understand perceptions of current infrastructure conditions and to identify the types of investments needed for sidewalks, bus stops, patio spaces, trees, and more along 82 Avenue NW. The survey takes approximately 5 to 10 minutes to complete.

Survey: Prioritize Whyte Ave
