Listening, Playing, and Creating Together

Join a free six-week community music program at Strathcona Community League, from Friday, July 3 to Friday, August 7. The program is led by Behrang Nikaeen, ethnomusicologist and musician.

Together, we will listen to music traditions from different parts of the world, watch short live performances, and talk about the music we hear. Led by Behrang Nikaeen, PhD in Ethnomusicology; musician, the program will especially introduce sounds and instruments from West Asian music, while creating space for broader collective music-making.

Participants are welcome to bring their voice, instruments, or curiosity and take part in simple group music-making. No musical experience is needed. Improvisation will be introduced informally and accessibly through simple rhythms, simple musical patterns, listening, and response.

Sports Day Cancelled

The current Environment Canada weather forecast for tomorrow (June 20) is calling for 20-30mm of rain beginning early in the morning so we are unfortunately cancelling Sports Day.

Participate in June bike month scavenger hunt run by Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues. The EFCL has selected 60 locations around the city, ranging from Community League amenities to City of Edmonton landmarks, neighbourhood gems to some incredible local businesses who’ve promised to reward intrepid hunters. And all you have to do to take part is ride your bike and have a Community League membership.

Here’s how it works.

1. Visit one of the designated locations on your bike. See the EFCL map or the information below for the complete list.
2. Snap a picture of you/your bike at the location of your choice.
3. Tag EFCL to be included in the draw. Tag us on Instagram (@theefcl) with hashtag #efclbikemonth or email your pictures to communications@efcl.org
4. If you’re at one of our business partners, show them your Community League membership and enjoy a special reward

Councillor Michael Janz is seeking feedback from Ward papastew residents regarding ongoing neighborhood impacts from EPCOR’s Mill Creek Trunk Rehabilitation Project.

According to EPCOR, this main artery handles wastewater for over 58,000 connections across south Edmonton. This infrastructure project involves constructing an upsized, 2.1m diameter sewer trunk tunnel 20 to 30 meters beneath 97 Street to redirect flow. 

Our office has received complaints from residents regarding odours and property impacts. This survey aims to map the geographic scope of these issues and assess their impacts across Ward papastew neighbourhoods, including Ritchie, King Edward Park, Bonnie Doon, and East Strathcona / Mill Creek. This will allow us to work with EPCOR to resolve these issues.

Privacy: 
This information is being collected by the office of Michael Janz, City Councillor for Ward papastew. To clearly understand the impacts of this project, we need to determine the specific area these issues are occurring. A list of addresses may be shared with EPCOR, but it will be used strictly for remediation of concerns specific to the Mill Creek Trunk Rehabilitation Project. Any public communication on this topic will use anonymized data and will not include specific addresses.
Your address and personal details will never be shared publicly.

SCCL Community Sports Day is Saturday, June 20 from 11AM to 2PM (weather permitting).

It’s a free, all ages, family-friendly event and a great opportunity to play some sports under the sun while enjoying the free hot dog BBQ. No experience required!

Join us for field games and a friendly drop-in pickleball round robin. If you’d like to enter your team of 2 for pickleball, please email sport@strathconacommunity.ca. If you want to just drop-in, we will pair you with whoever wants to play!

Matches and field games will be starting at 11AM on June 20. Hope to see you there!

Reminder!

It’s That Time Of Year Again! The BIG BIN EVENT is back so bring any large items that you have been itching to liberate from your home.  
If you have furniture, yard waste, renovation materials, and electronics, then come on over.  

There will be an area for freecycling if you think someone else could find it useful.  We are always happy to see unwanted items find a new life with someone else.

Items we cannot accept but can be taken to the Eco Station are:
Commercial Waste
Gas Powered Equipment (such as lawn mowers and snow blowers)
Hazardous Materials (please take to an Eco Station where they will be accepted at no cost)
We also ask that you take appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers, and washer/dryers to an Eco Station.

A Strathcona Centre Community League membership is required to participate. 
Bring your membership cards or verify with our membership list on site. If you don’t have one or want to renew, we can do that onsite. 
Memberships are Family-$20, Single-$15, Senior-$5.  You can also purchase one online at https://strathconacommunity.ca/membership/.
