Council turns down amendment Mezzo

Posted by & filed under Development Projects Strathcona, Neighbourhood.

We are very pleased with the outcome of todays council meeting in regards to the Mezzo development and the request from the developer to have the affordable housing provision changed. Council turned down the amendment request telling Westoak the developer to meet the provisions approved in the DC2 provision in April of 2016. We are very pleased that council understood the importance of affordable family housing in the communities of Queen Alex and Strathcona and is holding the developer accountable to the DC2 provision.

Thank you to Barbara Sanders and Kirsten Goa who also spoke in opposition on behalf of our community. Any communication sent to councillors from the community is also appreciated as in this case we gained a positive result. Councillor Henderson was very supportive and worked to assist us with our strategy and did an excellent job of raising the right questions to ensure the rest of council fully understood the important issues around this request for a DC2 provision change.

Mezzo Development Back to Council |Nov 15, 2017

Posted by & filed under Development Projects Strathcona, Neighbourhood.

I am not sure if you are aware but the Mezzo development is going back to council on November 15, 2017 as the affordable housing agreement with Habitat for Humanity has fallen through. It is our understanding that it was not a firm agreement when presented to council April 2016 when the Mezzo project was approved. This affordable housing provision we believe was a contributing factor for councillors to approve this development. The Strathcona Community League will be speaking against approval of this new amendment and encourage you to use social media, emails, etc. to let council know your opinion regarding this issue. If council approves this in principle it means developers can propose one thing for approval and then go back to council for reapproval later. It is a bait and switch tactic which the community league does not support.

The Mezzo approval has greatly impacted our community. Please share your opinions with the Mayor and councillors.

The following councillors did not support approval of the Mezzo development.

Councillor Henderson

Councillor McKeen

Councillor Knack

A throw back to summer | Canada 150 Event | Sept 16-17

Posted by & filed under SCL.

What a good time to look back at some warmer days. Mid September SCCL organised ‘Canada 150 Event’; a two-day event organised in collaboration with The King Edward Elementary School Parent Council and The King Edward After School Program.

It featured an outdoor movie night on Saturday, September 16 and a barbeque on Sunday, September 17 with entertainment from local musicians, games and crafts for the children, storytellers focusing on history. Premier Rachel Notley brought greetings and spoke of the valuable contributions made by community leagues and its volunteers. Further Premier Notley and councilor Ben Henderson dedicated a bench to family Reg and Helen Gillespie. In earlier years Reg was president of the community league and the founder of our community hall. Reg Gillespie passed away this year in February. His wife Helen Gillespie is still very much involved with our community.

The event was a big success. More than 150 people attended the event. Of course, SCCL could not have done this without all the people and organisations in our community. We would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors that donated their time and effort to make this event a wonderful day for our community.
