Relation to Neighbourhood Renewal

The Southside Bike Network is currently a separate process of the neighbourhood renewal process. However the Strathcona Neighbourhood Renewal public engagement process is aligned with the south side bike network.

This report is a technical analysis of an all ages and abilities bike network on the south side of the river routes focussed on the neighbourhoods of Strathcona and Garneau. While it recommends bike routes and bike facility types, it also mentions to be implemented through Strathcona and Garneau Neighbourhood Renewal process and further public consultation is to be completed.

While it may not be specific, this further consultation is the Strathcona Neighbourhood Renewal engagement that is currently underway.

Discussions for the bike lanes and facility type began in January as and have not concluded. The only decision that has been made through the process to date are the locations of the east-west bike route and the north-south bike routes for the South Side Bike Network. The routes are below:

• East-West
• • 87 Avenue, 98 Street to Tommy Banks Way
• • Tommy Banks Way, 87 Avenue to 86 Avenue
• • 86 Avenue, Tommy Banks Way to 106 Street
• North-South
• • 100 Street, 82 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive
• • 98 Street, 83 Avenue to 91 Avenue

While the report recommends primarily one bike facility type (fully protected bike lanes), through the Strathcona Neighbourhood Renewal engagement a range of options have been proposed for each specific bike route location. Through the Neighbourhood Renewal Process the City has been collecting feedback on these multiple options in and the input received from the community will continue to shape the outcome of the bike facility type.

Final decisions made about the recommended bike facility types will be shared at the next neighbourhood-wide public engagement event on Wednesday, September 26 at St. Basil’s Cultural Centre.

The report also states:  “Implementing the proposed bike network will require a change to one-way operation for a number of roadways, including 86 Avenue, 87 Avenue, and 100 Street, which will affect neighbourhood traffic patterns. New traffic signals are required where the bike routes cross major roadways. The 110 Street bike route is proposed to be extended beyond the Garneau neighbourhood boundary by approximately 250 metres so that it connects to the 76 Avenue bike route.” Report Southside Bike Network
