Light Horse Park – Application for park changes
By Stephen Gallard, “Strathcona Remembers”
We are asking the City of Edmonton to officially name the park located near the old Dragoon Armouries in Old Strathcona “Light Horse Park”. This is the park that sits between Calgary Trail and Gateway Boulevard, between 85 and 86 Avenues.
This will reflect and capture the history of the Albertan Cavalry units to which the armoury was named after 19th AB Dragoons (1st unit in the area), which was rolled into the current Sth AB Light Horse (Alberta’s oldest Regiment). Both are distinguished regiments and both were horse-mounted in their earlier days. The name will also highlight the nature of Alberta where we are famous for our horsemanship going back to WWI, when mostly Albertans were tasked with breaking in of new mounts at Southhampton in the UK because of their inherently natural skills with the animals.
Light Horse will stand for a wonderful piece of neighbourhood and Albertan history, tie into the local building and park, where horses would have been kept, and remind everyone of the history Old Strathcona embraces. It will stand as a testament to service and honor Albertans have known to show when ever there is a cause needing them.
