SCCL’s Position on Bateman Land

Position

The Strathcona Centre Community League, SCCL, will present the Board’s official position to City Council on March 19th. The position was reached by public consultation through:

  1. two open houses,
  2. letters received from community members, and
  3. a community survey with 437 respondents.

The community’s feedback was clear; it did not support high rise development.

The Civics and Planning previous chair Grant Moore, present Civics and Planning chair Peigi Rockwell, myself  Maureen Duguay, president, members of the executive and ad hoc committee chair Mark Anielski met with Dialog (Bateman group) on several occasions to achieve the concessions reflected in the project to be presented to Council. The Community League supports the family-friendly housing, the retention of the grocery store, the amenity green spaces and community gardens and the development of a Good Neighbour Agreement.

We recognize the concessions by the developer were made in response to the feedback given by the community members and the League.  Many are very positive however the SCCL official position is in opposition to the development because the majority of our community spoke out against the height.

Attached is the official board position and the summary survey results from the community.

Preparation

On Friday, March 16 at 7pm everyone wanting to speak to Council, about the Bateman development, is invited to meet in the League’s Hall for an organizational meeting.

Other opinions and developments

It has been brought to the Strathcona Centre Community League’s attention that an other group in the neighbourhood has been formed. While made up of community league members, this is not an official committee of the Community League. The city recognizes the SCCL as the official voice of the community.
