Strathcona Lighting Team Meeting – Thursday May 17 at 6:30pm
Would you like to help Strathcona get upgraded street lights?
Strathcona community members are invited to a meeting on Thursday May 17 at 6:30pm in the community league lounge. Community members will meet at 6:30, with Becky Redford from the city coming at 7 pm. Here is an agenda:
- 6:30 – 7:00
- introductions
- team structure – We will need someone to be the single point of contact on this team. They will work closely with the neighbourhood renewal co-chair (that’s me right now, but it will be Jeff Samsonow when I leave in early June).
- 7:00 – 8:00
- Becky Redford explain the process and light standard options
- questions/discussion
There will be one, possibly two big items that this team will deal with:
- Choosing a light standard for the neighbourhood. This will entail offering at least two options to the community via internet poll and submitting the winning choice to the city by July 3.
- Possibly:
- Traditionally, upgrading from the standard ugly/yucky lights has been an “opt in” process. Community members need to gather signatures over a 75-day period, and get 51% of title holders in the neighbourhood to sign that they are willing to accept a small tax levy (approximately $12/year for 10 years)
- However, the city is trying to change the process to make it “opt out”.
- We don’t know what way we will have to go on this. We may need to gather the signatures, starting in September. That would be a significant effort, since so many of the units in our community are rentals.
See you on Thursday evening!
Conrad Nobert, Co-Chair, Strathcona Working Committee (the committee that is working on neighbourhood renewal)
