Strathcona’s new look: Neighbourhood Renewal final designs

The City of Edmonton has finalized its plans for renewal of Strathcona’s roads, sidewalks, streetlights and open spaces. At an open house February 5, the newest maps and designs were shared, and everything is now online at Strathcona’s dedicated project page at the City’s website.

Highlights include:

  • Replacement of all road surfaces
  • Replacement of all existing sidewalks (pending any localized appeals)
  • Additional sidewalks to connect more of the sidewalk network
  • New street lights
  • A 30 km/h posted speed limit
  • New road safety design, including built items like raised intersections, curb extensions and mid-block crossings, and new traffic signage
  • New bike infrastructure on 100 Street, 98 Street and 87/86 Avenue
  • A shared-used path along the streetcar rail line
  • Open space enhancements including upgrades in WC Tubby Bateman and Fred A Moire Parks, parklets on 98 Street and trees added on 86 Avenue

If you attended the open house, your feedback on the event is welcome. Even if you didn’t, this is one more opportunity to share your thoughts on the design.

Construction on the plans will begin this spring, likely in May 2019. This year’s work will happen between Whyte Avenue and 87 Avenue, from 107 Street to 101 Street. Please see the construction map “Strathcona Renewal construction map, 2019 ” for more details, or find it on the City’s website.

If you live in this part of the neighbourhood, you’ll want to attend a pre-construction meeting with the City on March 4, 2019 at the Strathcona Community Hall to hear how and when things will happen this year.

Construction will continue in 2020 and 2021, for areas east of 101 Street and north of 87 Avenue respectively. Maps for this planned construction are also at the City’s project page for Strathcona.

If you have any questions about the Neighbourhood Renewal project or construction, please contact the City’s Building Great Neighbourhood team by email, buildingreatneighbourhoods@edmonton.ca, or phone 311.

The board of the community league would also like to thank everyone in the neighbourhood who participated in the public engagement process. Your voice is appreciated.
