North Saskatchewan River Valley Conservation Society -Walking Tour Opportunities
Explore River Valley via Jane’s Walk
On the first weekend of May every year, festivals take place in hundreds of cities across the globe. Jane’s Walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
Urban planner Erik Backstrom will discuss the environmental history and significance of Fulton Ravine, one of Edmonton’s lost creeks, and librarian Shannon Clarke will explain how the new Capilano Library takes advantage of its ravine-side location. The walk is May 4, 12:30 PM, begins at Capilano Library – 9915-67 Street and will be 1.5 hours and 3 km long.
Kathryn Ivany’s walk will focus on history and development in the river valley from the 1890s until today and plans for the future. Walterdale, Rossdale and the connections across the river and the parks along it will be discussed and explored. A brief visit to Queen Elizabeth Park will whet your appetite to explore later at your leisure. The walk is May 5, 3:00 PM, begins at the John Walter Museum, on the north side of the Kinsmen Sports Centre parking lot and will be 1.5 hours. Off-roaders driving their four-by-fours and trucks in river valley
For many, it’s the Alberta dream — off-roading a luxury, gas-guzzling truck through the mud. A group of local hobbyists are living that dream, albeit in miniature. On sunny afternoons, you’ll find the off-roaders driving their souped-up four-by-fours and monster trucks through Edmonton’s river valley. But you’ll have to look hard. These trucks are RC (radio-controlled) and they’re tiny. Learn more and watch video at https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/radio-controlled-trucks-rc-hobbyists-alberta-1.5107243
